Kumbh Mela ( कुम्भ मेला) is a mass Hindu pilgrimage in which Hindus gather at the Sangam, meeting place, of the rivers Ganges, Yamuna and mythical Sarasvati, at Prayag where bathing for purification from sin is considered especially auspicious. The festival is billed as the biggest human gathering in the world. In 2001, more than 40 million people gathered on the main bathing day at Allahabad, breaking a world record for the biggest human gathering. The Ardh (half) Kumbh Mela is celebrated every six years at Haridwar and Allahabad, the Purna (complete) Kumbh takes place every twelve years,at four places Allahabad, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik. The Maha (great) Kumbh Mela which comes after 12 'Purna Kumbh Melas', or 144 years, is held at Allahabad.According to the Mela Administration's estimates, around 70 million people participated in the 45-day Ardh Kumbh Mela in Allahabad, in 2007.The previous Kumbh Mela, held in 2001 in Haridwar, was, before it occurred, estimated by the authorities to attract between 30 and 70 million people. The current Maha Kumbh Mela began on January 14th, 2013 at Prayag.
The Maha Kumbh, often described as the 'greatest show on earth', began on Monday morning with lakhs of devotees as well as ascetics and religious leaders converging on the confluence of Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical river Saraswati in Allahabad for a holy dip on the occasion of Makar Sankranti.Several crore devotees and people from across the country as well as abroad are expected to attend the religious gathering. Many foreigners have also come to Allahabad to witness amazing show of Indian culture.A Russian tourist Ala and her husband Barno have decided to spend a long time in Allahabad during the Kumbh Mela. They are facing language problem but are inspired and interested in enjoying the Indian culture. Allahabad Maha Kumbh Mela is a big draw for foreigners tooNarayan, who is an Indian and working in Germany, has come with his mother to be a part of the Kumbh Mela. Narayan has been left mesmerised by the huge gathering of humanity for the Kumbh Mela and is enjoying at Sangam
Timing:
The Triveni Sangam, or the intersection of Yamuna River and Ganges River and the mythical Sarasvati River, where devotees perform rituals.Kumbh Mela is celebrated at different locations depending on the position of the planet of Bṛhaspati (Jupiter) and the sun. When Jupiter and the sun are in the zodiac sign Leo (Simha Rashi) it is held in Trimbakeshwar, Nashik; when the sun is in Aries (Mesha Rashi) it is celebrated at Haridwar; when Jupiter is in Taurus (Vrishabha Rashi ) and the sun is in Capricorn (Makar Rashi) Kumbha Mela is celebrated at Prayag; and Jupiter and the sun are in Scorpio (Vrishchik Rashi) the Mela is celebrated at Ujjain.[10][11] Each site's celebration dates are calculated in advance according to a special combination of zodiacal positions of Sun, Moon, and Jupiter.

History:

The first written evidence of the Kumbha Mela can be found in the accounts of Chinese traveler, Huan Tsang or Xuanzang (602 - 664 A.D.) who visited India in 629 -645 CE, during the reign of King Harshavardhana. However, similar observances date back many centuries, where the river festivals first started getting organised. According to medieval Hindu theology, its origin is found in one of the most popular medieval puranas, the Bhagavata Purana. The Samudra manthan episode (Churning of the ocean of milk), is mentioned in the Bhagavata Purana, Vishnu Purana, the Mahabharata, and the Ramayana. The account goes that the demigods had lost their strength by the curse of Durväsä Muni, and to regain it, they approach Lord Brahma and Lord Shiva than they directed all demigods to Supreme Personalty of Godhead Lord Visnu (full story on kumbh mela) and after praying to Lord Visnu, He instructed them for churning ocean of milk Ksheera Sagara (primordial ocean of milk) for amrita (the nectar of immortality). This required them to make a temporary agreement with their arch enemies, the demons or Asuras, to work together with a promise of sharing the wealth equally thereafter. However, when the Kumbha (urn) containing the amrita appeared, a fight ensued. For twelve days and twelve nights (equivalent to twelve human years) the gods and demons fought in the sky for the pot of amrita. It is believed that during the battle, Lord Vishnu(Incarnates as Mohini-Mürti) flew away with the Kumbha of elixir spilling drops of amrita at four places: Allahabad, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik.

Attendance:
According to The Imperial Gazetteer of India, an outbreak of cholera occurred at the 1892 Mela at Haridwar leading to the rapid improvement of arrangements by the authorities and to the formation of Haridwar Improvement Society. In 1903 about 400,000 people are recorded as attending the fair.[During the 1954 Kumbh Mela stampede at Prayag, around 500 people were killed, and scores were injured. Ten million people gathered at Haridwar for the Kumbh on April 14, 1998.The 1998 Kumbh Mela saw over 10 million pilgrims visiting Hardwar, to take a dip in the holy Ganges river. In 2001, around 1 million people from outside of India and from around the world participated in the Maha Kumbh Mela at Allahabad, with a total participation of approximately 60 million. This mela was unusually significant due to the planetary positions at the time, a pattern that repeats only once every 144 years

NOKIA LUMIA 920 AND 820

PRE-ORDERS BEGIN AS WEBSITES START LISTING

A press release by Nokia India is slated to be held on January 10 in Delhi with simulcasts in Mumbai amongst other cities. There is no official word on what exactly this conference is going to be held for, but in all probability, it is going to be for the official launch of the much awaited Lumia 920 and 820. What’s more, some online mobile retail websites have already put up the Lumia duo up for pre-orders. The Mobile Store has already put up the phones in its range of colours up for pre-order, with the Nokia Lumia 920 for Rs. 39,999 and the Nokia Lumia 820 for Rs. 29,999. Both the phones up for pre-order can be bought in black, yellow, white and red colours. The site mentions that the product will start shipping on January 12, but also has a disclaimer put up that states, “The above price is only a pre-order price. Actual Price may vary. We will refund the difference upon confirmation of actual price.”Flipkart, on the other hand, has a tantalising ‘Coming Soon’ written next to all variants of the Lumia 920 and 820 handsets. They’ve been listed for a slightly cheaper Rs. 36,999 and Rs. Rs. 26,999 respectively. Once users have registered with the site expressing interest in any of the handsets, Flipkart will inform them about when the pieces will be in stock.

Our sources in the grey market are not so easy on the pricing though. The on-street pricing of the Lumia 920 is about a cool Rs. 5,000 more than the website pre-order listing, with a hefty Rs. 45,000 being quoted as the price to pay in order to receive the high-end Windows 8 handset as soon as it is launched. The Nokia Lumia 820 too is priced slightly higher at Rs 33,000 as the market price.Nokia’s official website, on the other hand, features a cool blue sash across the upcoming Lumia devices with a ‘Coming Soon’ plastered across. The Finnish giants are squeezing every bit of curiosity out of the Indian audiences.
The Lumia 920 is priced in Singapore at SGD 899, which roughly translates to Rs 40,750, whereas the Lumia 820 costs SGD 699, which is approximately Rs 31,700. However, one should not expect the prices to be the same when the handsets come to India—the additional taxes could make the devices cost a bit more.Coming loaded with a polycarbonate body, the Nokia Lumia 920 features a Snapdragon S4 processor as well as a PureView sensor. It also comes with the Blink app, which is the smartphone's Burst mode. The Windows Phone 8 smartphone will feature an LCD display, which is a little better than the HD displays available now.

The Lumia 920 has 32GB inbuilt storage, an 8.7MP primary camera and a 1.2MP front one. The younger sibling Lumia 820 is powered by 1.5GHz Qualcomm S4 dual-core processor. It comes with an 8MP rear camera and a VGA front camera. Both phones support wireless charging. We will be bringing you more from the impending press conference as and when the news is released.

SUSPECTED SERIAL KILLER

Threat Calls To Rape Survivor From Jail

Mahanand Naik killer.Goa Police has registered an offence against suspected serial killer Mahanand Naik under Information Technology Act for threatening a woman, whom he had allegedly raped, using a mobile phone from inside the high-security Central Jail at Aguada near Panaji. "Inquiries into the complaint made by the victim at Ponda Police had revealed that the calls were actually made to her from the mobile phone which had a location at Calangute, where Aguada Jail is located", a state police spokesman said on Thursday.Preliminary investigations into the calls have revealed how banned articles like mobile phones were smuggled into the prison. According to police, the mobile phone number allegedly used by Mahanand in making threatening calls to the rape survivor was registered in the name of one Wilfred Rodrigues, a resident of Nachinola village."However, Rodrigues has said that he does not know Mahanand", he said, adding the inquiries have revealed that the documents submitted to acquire the SIM card were forged. The investigations, he said, are surrounding the affairs within the jail and a massive search has been launched in the Portuguese-era jail to scout for the banned substances.
Preliminary investigations into the calls have revealed how banned articles like mobile phones were smuggled into the prison."We are yet to recover the mobile phone but we will get it soon", he added. Mahanand had 18 cases of murders against him of which he was acquitted in 8 cases while three cases in which he is convicted are being tried in the high court following his appeal. The alleged serial killer had been convicted in 2010 by the North Goa Sessions court for raping his wife's friend for four years and then threatening to kill her.
